Why are all profile pictures square?
Every major platform displays avatars in a circle or rounded square cropped from a square source, so square input never gets awkwardly cropped. Center your subject, since the circular mask clips the corners.
Should I crop before resizing?
Yes. Crop to a square first (your phone's gallery does this in two taps), then resize. Resizing a landscape photo to square dimensions here would stretch it; the aspect lock prevents accidents but cannot compose the shot for you.
What resolution do avatars actually need?
Platforms display them at 32–200px but store larger: 400–800px square is the sweet spot. Bigger wastes upload space; smaller turns blurry on retina screens.
