Frequently asked questions
Does compressing a JPG reduce its quality?
JPG is a lossy format, so re-compressing always discards some data, but at quality 75+ the difference is invisible to the human eye on screens. Avoid repeatedly re-compressing the same file; compress once from the original.
Will my JPG photos keep their EXIF data?
No, and that is a privacy feature. Re-encoding in the browser strips EXIF metadata, including GPS location and camera details. If you need to keep metadata, keep your original file.
JPG or JPEG: is there a difference?
None at all. The extensions .jpg and .jpeg refer to the exact same format; the shorter name exists because old Windows required three-letter extensions. This tool handles both identically.
Why is my JPG barely getting smaller?
The file is probably already well compressed. Photos exported from modern phones or previously compressed images have little redundancy left. Try converting to WebP instead. It typically saves another 20–30%.
