Which output format should I choose?
JPG for photographs without transparency, PNG when you need an alpha channel or pixel-perfect graphics, WebP as the modern default (smaller, supports transparency), and AVIF when maximum compression matters and you control the target environment.
Can it detect the format of mislabeled files?
Yes. The tool reads each file's magic bytes rather than trusting the extension. A PNG renamed to .jpg is converted as the PNG it truly is, which fixes a surprising number of "this file is broken" mysteries.
Is converting lossless?
Converting to PNG is lossless from the decoded pixels. Converting to JPG, WebP or AVIF applies the quality setting you choose. 85+ is visually lossless for photos. Note that converting a lossy file to a lossless format never recovers data already discarded.
