Frequently asked questions
Will compressing a PNG remove its transparency?
No. This tool re-encodes PNG with the alpha channel fully intact. If you switch the output to WebP, transparency is preserved as well, unlike converting to JPG, which does not support transparency at all.
Why is WebP smaller than PNG?
PNG uses lossless compression only, which is inefficient for gradients and photos. WebP supports both lossy and lossless modes; its lossy mode with alpha typically produces files 3–5× smaller than the equivalent PNG for UI graphics and screenshots.
Is PNG compression lossless here?
When the output format is PNG, yes. Dimensions and transparency are preserved exactly. For photographs, converting to WebP lossy will be dramatically smaller with no visible difference; the choice is yours.
What kinds of PNG files compress best?
Screenshots, UI graphics, logos and illustrations with flat color areas compress extremely well. Dense photographs stored as PNG (a common mistake) benefit the most from conversion to WebP or JPG.
