How to Remove the Background from a Logo

Every designer knows the pain: you need the company logo, and the only file anyone can find is a JPG stuck on a white background. Here is how to fix that in seconds, and how to know when you should be asking for the original file instead.
The 30-second method

Logos are the easiest case for automatic background removal: flat colors, sharp edges, high contrast against the background. Results are usually pixel-clean.
Before you start: use the best source file
The cutout keeps the original resolution, so the output is only ever as good as the input.
- Use the largest version available. A 2000px logo file becomes a crisp asset; a 200px thumbnail becomes a blurry one.
- Prefer a flat, single-color background. A logo on white works far better than a photo or gradient background.
- Avoid already-compressed JPGs when possible. JPG artifacts around edges get baked into the cutout.
Special cases
- White logo on white background. Nearly invisible edges make detection hard. If you have any version of the logo on a darker background, use that one.
- Gradients and glow effects. A gradient inside the logo is preserved; a glow that fades into the background will be partially removed, because the model cannot tell where the logo ends.
- Multi-color busy logos. These still work. Detection keys on shape and contrast, not color count.
When you should not use a cutout at all
A cutout PNG is a repair job. The real fix is getting the original vector file (SVG or AI/EPS) from whoever made the logo. You can tell you need it when:
- The logo will be printed large (vehicle wraps, banners, signage).
- The logo must scale tiny (favicon) and huge (billboard) from one file.
- You need to change the logo's colors precisely.
