How to Remove the Background from a Product Photo

Updated September 7, 2026

A product photo on a clean white or transparent background converts better and is literally required by most marketplaces. This guide covers the fastest way to get there and how to shoot products so the automatic cutout comes out clean.

The fast path

1. Open the product background remover. 2. Upload your product photo. 3. Download the cutout: JPG on pure white for marketplace main images, or transparent PNG for your own shop and designs.

The whole process runs in your browser, so unreleased products and client work never leave your device.

Why white backgrounds matter for selling

  • Amazon requires the main listing image on pure white (RGB 255,255,255).
  • eBay and Etsy strongly favor clean, distraction-free backgrounds.
  • Your own shop looks more professional when every product sits in the same clean context.
  • Ads and social re-use the same cutouts on any background color.

Shoot for clean cutouts

Automatic removal is only as good as the photo. You do not need a studio. Daylight and a plain surface get you 95% of the way:

  • Diffused daylight near a window beats a harsh on-camera flash. Hard shadows read as "object" to edge detection.
  • A plain, contrasting surface. White product on white table is the worst case; add a sheet of colored paper underneath.
  • Fill the frame with the product. Empty background is wasted pixels.
  • Shoot straight-on or slightly above. Extreme angles create long shadows.

After the cutout: two files, two jobs

  • JPG on white (default): the marketplace main image. Pure white fill, sRGB, at least 1000×1000 px so zoom works.
  • Transparent PNG: your master asset. Reuse it on any background: category headers, ads, email, print.

Keep the transparent PNG as your long-term master and export the white-background JPG from it whenever a channel demands one.

Common problems and fixes

  • Shadow attached to the product. Soft contact shadows are usually removed with the background; harsh shadows can survive. Re-shoot with more diffuse light.
  • Reflective or glass products. Semi-transparent subjects are inherently tricky. Try a darker backdrop so reflections read clearly.
  • Halo around the product. The source photo was low-resolution or heavily compressed. Use the original camera file, not a WhatsApp-compressed copy.

Summary

Shoot in daylight on a contrasting surface, run the photo through the product background remover, and export both the white JPG and the transparent PNG. Free, no watermark, no per-image fees. See also removing backgrounds from any image.

Frequently asked questions

Does Amazon require a white background?

Yes. The main (primary) listing image must have a pure white background (RGB 255,255,255). Additional images may show the product in context.

How do I put my product on a white background?

Upload the photo to the product background remover and download as JPG. The background fill defaults to pure white. Or download the transparent PNG and place it on white yourself.

Do I need a lightbox?

No. A window with diffused daylight and a plain contrasting surface produces cutouts that are just as clean.
