How to use the grayscale image

Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as desaturating in my editor?
Yes, when your editor uses luminance-based desaturation. The conversion weights red, green and blue by how the eye perceives brightness (0.299 / 0.587 / 0.114), so a blue sky comes out darker than a yellow wall of the same RGB intensity, as in real black-and-white photography.
Does converting to grayscale shrink the file?
Slightly, not dramatically: JPEG and WebP still store three channels, now identical. Expect a small reduction. For real size savings, combine with compression or convert to WebP.
Can I grayscale a PNG and keep transparency?
Yes. The alpha channel passes through untouched; only the color channels are converted. PNG and WebP outputs keep transparency exactly.
