How do I make an image background transparent?

Which format do I get?
A PNG file, because PNG supports per-pixel transparency. JPG files cannot be transparent, so if you download a JPG a solid background color is applied instead.
Will the transparent areas look white when I open the file?
Some image viewers display transparency as a checkerboard or a solid color. That is the viewer, not the file. In design tools, presentations, and web pages the transparent areas will be genuinely see-through.
Does it work with logos and graphics?
