Get feed posts pixel-perfect: 1:1 at 1080×1080, the engagement-boosting 4:5 portrait at 1080×1350, or wide 1.91:1 at 1080×566. Feed posts must stay within these ratios or Instagram crops them. Resize locally first and see exactly what followers will see.
The feed only accepts a narrow band of aspect ratios, from 1.91:1 at the wide end to 4:5 at the tall end. Hand it anything outside that band and it trims to fit, and its automatic crop has no idea which part of your photo is the point, so it often lops off a head or a caption. Deciding the crop yourself, before you upload, is the whole reason to resize to an exact preset here.

Square, portrait, or landscape
Portrait 1080×1350 (4:5) is the space-maximising choice and the current default recommendation for a single photo, because it fills roughly a quarter more feed height than a square before the reader scrolls past. Reach for it whenever the image can be composed a little taller.
The 1080×1080 square is still the safe, predictable option and the one that sits most neatly in your profile grid, which matters if grid consistency is part of your look. Landscape 1080×566 (1.91:1) suits genuinely wide scenes and link-preview-style cards, but it is the smallest of the three in the feed, so use it deliberately rather than by default.
Frequently asked questions
Why does Instagram crop my photos?
The feed accepts ratios between about 1.91:1 (wide) and 4:5 (tall). Outside that range Instagram trims to fit, usually butchering the composition. Pre-resizing to an exact ratio puts you in control of the crop.
Is 1080×1080 still the standard post?
It is the classic, but 4:5 (1080×1350) occupies about 25% more feed height and has become the default recommendation for single photos. Both remain fully supported.
Can I post higher than 1080px wide?
You can upload it, but Instagram downscales to 1080px anyway. Beyond ~1440px you are purely wasting upload time and mobile data.
