Lower than you instinctively reach for: AVIF at 60 typically matches JPG at 85. Start at 60 and look at the preview; only climb if fine detail genuinely suffers. This is the main way AVIF achieves its size advantage.
Why does AVIF encoding take longer?
The AV1 codec explores far more compression strategies per image than older codecs. The work runs in background threads so the page stays responsive, but expect a couple of seconds per large image. WebP output is offered on this page precisely for when speed beats the last 15% of size.
Does right-sizing affect transparency or HDR?
Transparency survives untouched. Wide-gamut color (P3) is preserved through decoding and re-encoding; true HDR gain maps are re-encoded like any other pixel data.
