What is AVIF exactly?
AV1 Image File Format, an image encoding based on the AV1 video codec. It achieves the best compression of any mainstream image format today: about half the size of JPG and 20% under WebP at comparable quality.
Which browsers support AVIF?
Chrome 85+, Edge, Firefox 93+, Opera, and Safari 16+ (macOS Ventura and iOS 16 era). That covers effectively all traffic in 2026, but AVIF support is absent in older Safari and some embedded webviews. Check your audience.
Why not always use AVIF then?
Encoding is slower than WebP (seconds vs near-instant on big batches), and a few ecosystems (notably older iOS devices and some CMS pipelines) still stumble on it. WebP remains the pragmatic default; AVIF shines for large hero images where bytes matter most.
